3D printed Wi-Fi QR code sign for rentals and businesses
“What's the Wi-Fi password?” is the most asked question in any vacation rental, B&B or café. A Wi-Fi QR code ends it: guests point their camera and the phone connects on its own. 3D printed, it also lasts for years.
How a Wi-Fi QR code works
The code stores three things: the network name, the password and the security type. When scanned, the phone recognizes it as a Wi-Fi network and offers to connect with one tap. It works with the camera of any recent iPhone or Android, no app needed.
It's a static code: the details are stored in the pattern itself. It doesn't depend on any external service, never expires and has no scan limit.
How to make it, step by step
- Open the generator and choose the “Wi-Fi” tab.
- Type the network name exactly as it appears on your phone, including capitals and spaces.
- Type the password and choose the security type. If you're not sure, it's almost certainly WPA.
- Before printing anything, scan the on-screen code with your phone and check that it connects.
- Choose the format and colors, and download the 3MF file.
Your password never leaves your device: the code is generated in your own browser and isn't sent to any server.
Which format to choose
- Wall sign. The best option for the entrance of a rental. It has two holes to screw or hang it.
- Table stand. Ideal for a bedside table, desk or reception counter.
- Keychain. Handy to hand over with the keys, although being small it works best with a short password.
Add raised text such as “WIFI” or the name of your place so its purpose is clear at a glance.
Security tips
- Use a guest network. Most routers let you create a separate network for visitors, isolated from your own devices. That's the one to put in the code.
- Keep it indoors, not facing the street. Anyone who sees the code can connect.
- If you change the password, the code stops working. You'll need to generate and print a new one, so pick a password you don't plan to change often.
If the code doesn't connect
First check the network name is spelled exactly right, capitals included. Then check the security type. Very long passwords create codes with many modules, which are harder to print at small sizes: in that case, make the part bigger.
